Amihan to bring rains to eastern PH

MANILA, Philippines — The northeast monsoon, or amihan, is expected to strengthen in the coming days, bringing rains to the eastern parts of the country, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa declared the start of the amihan season on November 19, which typically lasts until March or April.

Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda reported that the amihan continues to affect Northern and Central Luzon and is expected to strengthen slightly over the next few days. This will bring cooler temperatures to much of Luzon, with an increased chance of rainfall in the eastern regions, caused by the northeast monsoon and shear line.

A shear line occurs when cold winds from the monsoon meet warm winds from the Pacific.

While Pagasa is not monitoring any new low-pressure areas or issuing gale warnings, Castañeda noted the need for ongoing monitoring, especially as the amihan strengthens, potentially causing moderate to rough seas along Northern Luzon’s coastlines.
