PAGASA: 8 Tropical Cyclones Expected in PAR from January to June
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts that between two and eight tropical cyclones could form within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the first half of this year.
At least one cyclone is expected each month from January to April, with one to two cyclones projected for May and June.
However, PAGASA notes that the period from January to May is typically a quieter phase for cyclone activity in the western North Pacific, where the Philippines is located.
The official cyclone names for 2025 include Auring, Bising, Crising, Dante, Emong, Fabian, Gorio, Huaning, Isang, Jacinto, Kiko, Lannie, Mirasol, Nando, Opong, Paolo, Quedan, Ramil, Salome, Tino, Uwan, Verbena, Wilma, Yasmin, and Zoraida.
Auxiliary names, which will be used if needed, are Alamid, Bruno, Conching, Dolor, Ernie, Florante, Gerardo, Hernan, Isko, and Jerome.
The state weather bureau has retired the names Jolina, Maring, and Odette due to the significant damage they caused in 2021.
Additionally, PAGASA may retire the names of five cyclones that resulted in fatalities and extensive financial losses: Aghon, Carina, Enteng, Julian, and Kristine.
Cyclones Aghon, Enteng, and Julian collectively caused over P5 billion in damages, while Butchoy and Carina resulted in more than P10 billion. Kristine and Leon together caused P18 billion in damages.
The cyclones in 2024 caused nearly P40 billion in damages, along with significant casualties. With 17 cyclones entering the country that year, including six that hit Northern Luzon consecutively, PAGASA is urging Filipinos to be prepared for the upcoming storm season.
