Excavation, trenching, and working in and around trenches rank among the most dangerous activities on any construction site. Collapses and cave-ins are the most common hazards, causing about three dozen fatalities and hundreds of injuries to construction workers each year. Other serious threats include falls, falling or tipping heavy equipment, and falling loads.

OSHA defines an excavation as “any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression in the earth’s surface formed by earth removal.” A trench is specifically defined as “a narrow underground excavation that is deeper than it is wide, and is no wider than 15 feet.”

When working at a trench or excavation site, always keep these critical safety measures in mind. Here are some of the most important tips for ensuring construction worker safety at these sites.

This weekend (March 15 to 17, 2024), traffic congestion is anticipated in various roads across Metro Manila as tunnel boring machines are transported for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) construction. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced via social media that the machines will be conveyed to the Camp Aguinaldo Station in Quezon City.

During the specified periods of March 15 from 9 p.m. to March 16 at 4 a.m., and March 16 from 9 p.m. to March 17 at 4 a.m., the following roads are expected to experience delays:

Port/R-10 (from 9:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M.)
C3 Road (from 9:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.)
5th Avenue (from 10:30 P.M. to 12:00 A.M.)
G. Araneta Avenue (from 12:00 A.M. to 1:30 A.M.)
E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue (from 1:30 A.M. to 2:00 A.M.)
Gilmore Avenue (from 2:00 A.M. to 3:00 A.M.)
Col. Bonny Serrano Avenue (from 3:00 A.M. to 4:00 A.M.)
