MANILA, Philippines — Five areas in Luzon recorded heat index levels within the "danger" zone on Wednesday, prompting class and work suspensions in at least two locations, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Pagasa also forecasted that heat index levels across most parts of the country will range between 33°C and 41°C for the remainder of the week.

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, stations in Echague (Isabela), Baler (Aurora), San Jose (Occidental Mindoro), and Pili (Camarines Sur) registered a heat index of 42°C, while Virac (Catanduanes) recorded the highest at 43°C.

San Jose’s heat index is expected to stay at 42°C until Friday, keeping it in the "danger" category, while the rest will fall within the "extreme caution" range of 33°C to 41°C.

Meanwhile, Iba, Zambales, which has been in the "extreme caution" category since March 1, is projected to reach a "danger" level of 42°C by Friday.

The heat index, distinct from actual air temperature, represents the apparent temperature felt by humans, factoring in air temperature and relative humidity.
